He'd intended to refrain from using anything other than telekinesis until he'd got at least the bones of the new system in place, but.

But conversation with the Bar confirmed that Milliways's built-in safeguards would step in to regulate his magic use in lieu of his magic being able to regulate itself. It would, after all, require a remarkable series of stacked coincidences for Milliways to sustain any kind of damage; nothing Jim could do now would be anywhere near enough to set off that kind of cascade.

He still takes the precaution of having a room with extra buffers set up, just in case.

There is, of course, nothing Milliways can do to prevent Jim from injuring himself as he practices, and he finds very quickly that without his own system to guide his focus, his control over anything non-telekinetic is exceedingly poor.

It was worth experimenting with, anyway. And at least the infirmary is handy.

"This is exactly the sort of thing people sue about," John points out. Not that he thinks Jim would willingly step foot in a courtroom, but whatever.

"All right," he says. "Where do I start?"

He cannot believe he's doing this. He should have just let Jim come in here and blow himself up or whatever he was going to do.

"If you can work out which court would have jurisdiction in this case, I might try it just for fun."

He nods toward the cabinet that holds the most commonly used equipment and describes a handheld device for stimulating cell regeneration. Designed to be easy to use for anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of first aid, it's not the quickest option, but it will be sufficient.

John probably doesn't have to vocalise just how much he hates Jim.

He finds the device and studies it for a moment, making a light 'hum' as he looks it over.

"Last I heard about this thing, it was still in early testing."

"Milliways," Jim reminds him.

That's hardly an early prototype John is holding. It's the streamlined, perfected version from rather later in his timeline.

John found something about this device nearly a year ago, and did some research on it out of idle curiosity. There's been a lot of research into burn treatment, with something rather similar being developed in New Zealand as well.

Luckily, Asclepius the infirmary helper rat is around to get a lot of the preliminary set-up started, and being Milliways with all the mixed technology, it's a matter of minutes before everything is ready.

"I don't think this is meant to work on anything that's already healed," John says.

Yes, he's seen the other burns. Unlike his boyfriend, he's just been a bit more tactful about them.

(It shouldn't catch him off his guard, but it does. The current injury is holding too much of his attention.)

Jim's answer is pure, deadly ice.

"I don't think I asked about that."

If John were any less professional, he might let on that he's a bit pleased to have caught Jim off his guard.

"Right."

With that, he's ready to get started.

"This shouldn't hurt," he says, and starts in on the procedure.

John doesn't have to let on. Jim knows anyway. He clamps down hard on his annoyance, not allowing it to show.

It's largely directed at himself. He should have got rid of those scars long before now, the moment he found out it was possible to do so here. They're a chink in his armor. Keeping them is poor strategy.

John goes back to working in silence, treating Jim's burns like the calm professional he is.

It's probably clear that he's got a million other things on his mind, every one of them starting with 'Jim Moriarty,' but working at least keeps him focused enough to not say anything stupid.

Jim sits in perfect stillness, watching John work.

When that becomes boring, which it does fairly quickly, he closes his eyes and turns his attention to sorting through what he learned from using his magic to make fire. Brief as the experience was, it still had plenty of information to impart.

The whole procedure goes fairly quickly, as these things go. Once he's done, he dresses everything and checks to make sure the IV catheter hasn't damaged anything near it.

He may have a million things on his mind, but he has absolutely nothing to say to Jim.

"Has Mary mentioned our little conversation to you yet?"

His voice is an almost-lazy drawl; his eyes are still closed.

John pauses ever so slightly as he's cleaning up. It's as big of a tell as anything else he could have done.

"Sorry, what?"

"She was concerned about Sherlock."

He smiles faintly, opening his eyes.

"She had a few choice words for me on the subject."

He sounds more fondly amused than anything else.

John stiffens lightly.

"Did she now?" he asks.

He has no idea what this is meant to be all about, and is fairly certain that it's at least partially just Jim trying to cause problems.

"Of course," he says.

"It was rather useful, actually. Reminded me of the importance of making sure you and I are on the same page."

John is still less than impressed with where he thinks this is going.

"Please. Enlighten me," John says.

He really doesn't like where this is going.

"You both think of me as a cartoon villain," he says. "Committing atrocities for their own sake with no thought to the consequences, bound by someone else's silly script.

"And frankly, neither of you thinks much more highly of Sherlock, either."

Yep, this is definitely a wind-up, and John is not going to rise to it.

"Say what you want about me, but leave him out of this for now."

OK, maybe he is.

"That will make this a little more challenging," he says blandly, "but all right.

"Tell me, what do you expect from all this?"

"I'd like for you to leave us the hell alone," John says. "These are not the droids you're after, and all that. I expect you're going to keep being a pain in the arse, though."

Well. Is he wrong?

A brief half-smile flickers across his face.

"Did you know" - by which he means has Sherlock bothered to mention? - "there's at least one universe in which Richard Brook is real? Hopeless implausibilities and all."

[jumperfucker]

No, he didn't. But John is hardly surprised to hear this.

"Is he really?"

John finishes getting everything settled and throws his gloves in the bin.

"You're free to go, by the way. Just have someone check that in a few days."

He doesn't expect Jim to actually leave, somehow.

"I'll be surprised if he survives without intervention," Jim says idly. He doesn't move.

"I could be wrong, I suppose, it is theoretically possible" - though clearly not a theory he thinks much of - "but from the sound of things, his Holmes is going insane. If he hasn't got there already."

"What are you getting at?" John asks stiffly.

He pretends to be busy with the paperwork from Jim's visit. He hasn't actually written anything down, though.
